The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once. People with certain risk factors should get tested more often (for example: for a man who has had sex with another man, have had anal sex, have shared needles, syringes, or other drug injection equipment). People should get tested more often when they have had more than one sex partner or are having sex with someone whose sexual history they don’t know.
Collect your specimen in the morning and drop it in the mail, on the same day, using the pre-paid envelope we provide in your test kit.
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) test looks for HIV antibodies and antigens in your blood. An antigen is the part of the HIV virus that triggers your immune system to fight the infection. When your viral load is high, you have more HIV in your body. This means your immune system is not fighting HIV very well. HIV viral load tests are used to monitor the progress of your HIV infection and how well your treatment is working.
What Are the Symptoms of HIV?
Fever
Chills
Rash
Night sweats
Muscle aches
Sore throat
Fatigue
Swollen lymph nodes
The first 2-4 weeks after being infected with HIV, you may feel feverish, achy, and sick. These flu-like symptoms are your body’s first reaction to the HIV infection. During this time, there’s a lot of the virus in your system, so it’s really easy to spread HIV to other people.
A person can potentially have an asymptomatic HIV infection without knowing if they do not get tested. In some cases, this stage can last for 10 years . A person may not discover they have an HIV infection until their immune system cannot fight off opportunistic infections, such as salmonella or herpes.
