Measures average levels of blood glucose, also called blood sugar, over the past 3 months. The A1C test can diagnose type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, and is used for diabetes management.
Finger-Stick Sample
If you have risk factors for prediabetes or diabetes, such as being overweight, you may want to be tested. You may be able to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes with lifestyle changes such as weight loss or being physically active.
Requires fasting 10-12 hours prior to collecting specimen. Collect your specimen in the morning and drop it in the mail, on the same day, using the pre-paid envelope we provide in your test kit.
The A1C test is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months. It’s one of the commonly used tests to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes, and is also the main test to help you and your health care team manage your diabetes. Higher A1C levels are linked to diabetes complications, so reaching and maintaining your individual A1C goal is really important if you have diabetes.
When sugar enters your bloodstream, it attaches to hemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells. Everybody has some sugar attached to their hemoglobin, but people with higher blood sugar levels have more. The A1C test measures the percentage of your red blood cells that have sugar-coated hemoglobin.
This test measures your blood sugar after an overnight fast (not eating). A fasting blood sugar level of 99 mg/dL or lower is normal, 100 to 125 mg/dL indicates you have prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL or higher indicates you have diabetes.
An A1C test may be used to screen for:
Type 2 diabetes. With type 2 diabetes your blood glucose gets too high because your body doesn’t make enough insulin to move blood sugar from your bloodstream into your cells, or because your cells stop responding to insulin.
Prediabetes. Prediabetes means that your blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to diagnosed as diabetes. Lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating and exercise, may help delay or prevent prediabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes.
If you have diabetes or prediabetes, an A1C test can help monitor your condition and check how well you’ve been able to control your blood sugar levels.
Warning Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes:
Urinating often
Feeling very thirsty
Feeling very hungry—even though you are eating
Extreme fatigue
Blurry vision
Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
Weight loss—even though you are eating more (type 1)
Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)
The most serious effects of blood sugar swings are a higher risk for diabetes-related health complications such as stroke, heart disease, and nerve damage (neuropathy).
When your blood sugar is high, you may have increased thirst and a dry mouth, needing to pee frequently, cranky, tiredness, constant hungar, and blurred vision.
Symptoms of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) include:
Urinating large amounts
Excessive thirst
Feeling tired
Frequent hunger
Dry mouth
Weight loss
Blurred vision
Recurrent infections (e.g., urinary infections, skin infections)
Symptoms of Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) include:
Shaking and sweating
Feeling jittery
Difficulty concentrating
Lack of energy
Skin that looks paler than usual
Fatigue or tiredness
Headaches or muscle aches
Fast or irregular heartbeat
